1967 Hagstrom (Merson) Catalogue

CATALOGUES | HOME

This catalogue had been folded four times and probably and kept in the back pocket of a pair of frayed Levi's then stone-washed... What I mean is it was in terrible condition on receipt. So quite a lot of cut 'n' paste / blend / smudge / fill / pixel-size-repair had to be done before anything could be produced on this page... but hopefully it was worth it for the different views of the models.

Notice the Corvette had become the Condor by now, (still says Corvette on the headstock). The Cases look pretty classy too. Note that the prices were shown with each item.

If you go right to the bottom there's a text - lots to do with amps as well - which puts the record straight on Merson and Univox and Gulf and Western and .... oh just pop down there and take a look... ;-)

As I like to try out different methods of presentation, here you can click on a guitar model below.
This will take you to an enlarged version of the item complete with text.

So who was Merson?

I owe this text to a guy who added it to an auction text, and I apologise for not giving him a mention here.... but I forgot his name! (shame on me) - If you'd like to contact me we'll rectify that. Anyway here we go:
Unicord purchased the Amplifier Corporation of America (ACA) in Westbury, New York and marketed a series of tube amps under the name Univox. Before that Unicord was a manufacturer of electronic transformers. In 1967 Unicord was purchased by Gulf + Western (the oil company). Around this time Unicord merged with Merson, a guitar importer that distributed lines like "Tempo", "Giannini" and "Hagstrom". This new company was called "Merson Musical Products, A Division of Unicord Incorporated, A Gulf + Western Systems Company", at least until Merson and Unicord spilt in 1975. In 1968 company this company was still making amps, though they were hybrid amps with tubes and transistors. In 1978 Unicord stopped making the Univox line of guitars and equipment. They switched to an original line called "Westbury", which lasted until about 1982. Westbury amps were also made during this time. Also in 1978 Unicord started selling the exact same amps under the Stage and Univox name. The only difference between the amps was the label and color scheme. Unicord was trying to phase out the Univox name in favour of Stage. Finally, in 1985 due to the recession, Unicord was purchased completely by Korg, pretty much ending the story there.

There's nothing like a REAL original Swedish made Hagstrom (and there are loads around), but if it 'floats your boat', or you can't find an original then who are we to say?

Plenty has been said already and
will be said forever forward probably.
Only you know what's right for you!
